Atoll lagoons are quite large and often seem like placid lakes in the middle of the ocean, protected as they are by the reefs and islets that ring them.

Atoll plant life is not very diverse because the organic component of the soil is usually only 6" deep. Sand loving vines cover much of the ground.

The roots of the coconut tree are narrow and stringy in the shallow soil.  They turn red when they die, much like maple leaves in the fall in New England.

On Arno Atoll there is much evidence of sea level rise, as trees situated near beaches topple over after sea water washes over their soil.
