Hidden Waterways

Suzhou Creek, Shanghai, China

The Suzhou Creek's story is similar to the Lea/Lee, but this Shanghai waterway is headed towards gentrification even faster. Once highly industrialized and polluted, the waterway today has become a corridor for premium high-rise housing estates. While barges continue to ply the waterway, traditional neighborhoods and the cultural values they sustained are vanishing at an alarming rate. Naturalization is occurring as the government replaces decrepit piers with sparkling new riverside parks. The Suzhou, once a heartland of China’s economic resurgence, is becoming a playground for China’s rapidly emerging middle class.
